Eagle Butte School District 20-1

 

The Eagle Butte School District 20-1 is located in Central South Dakota and covers 1646 square miles of South Dakota Prairie. The District is bordered on the east by the Missouri River and on the south by the Cheyenne River. District Offices and the school are located in Eagle Butte on the Cheyenne River Sioux Indian Reservation. The district is unique in that the school is run cooperatively with the Bureau of Indian Affairs.  In addition, the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe has significant input in the operation of the school. The school staff and students are a mixture of Bureau and District responsibility with budgets used cooperatively.  The approximate enrollment of the K-12 school is 1143.  Of these students, about 98% are Native American.  The school is divided into five centers:  Primary (K-2), Upper Elementary (3-6), Junior High (7-8), High School (9-12) and E.A.G.L.E. Center (7-12 Alternative).

The Upper Elementary is one segment of the Eagle Butte School District 20-1.   The Upper Elementary has 390 students in grades three through six.  Of these students, 98% are Native American and 100% receive free and reduced lunch.  The school mobility rate is approximately 18%. Sixty-seven students (23%) are students with disabilities.  Two percent are on 504 plans, and fifteen percent are in the Gifted and Talented Program.   There are 20 regular education classrooms.  Support classes and shared resources available are media center, health, music, band, art, Lakota language and culture, counseling, computer aided instruction and PE.  Fifth grade students also participate in StarBase, a five week program of hands-on, interactive science and technology activities facilitated by outside experts. Lakota Circles Of Hope for grades 3-6.  A counselor and a school social worker meet with individuals, families, small groups and whole class groups for social learning skills and emotional support.  There are also three exceptional education staff including a STRIVE room for high needs students, a speech clinician, a behavior program and a gifted program available in the Upper Elementary. The Upper Elementary School offers after school activities.  These include: art club, Destination Imagination, Missoula Children’s Theatre, walking club, handgames club, newspaper club, and other enrichment activities from 21st Century.  A Homework Center is open Monday through Thursday from 3:15-4:00 and includes a snack and time to work, with assistance, before going home.
